One of these days I gotta get myself organizized...

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have a hard time writing, much less doing anything creative if my workspace (and house for that matter) is unorganized.  Everything must be neat and tidy for me to function properly.  Now I have friends that create the most amazing work in untidy workspaces and studios, but me, I just can’t do it.  Disorganization irks me to no end.

A little over a month ago, I mentioned that my wife and I were getting set to move.  What a mess that turned out to be.  Don’t get me wrong, the move was for the better -- we needed the space, especially with the upcoming new addition to our family (he’ll be here in less than three months).  But for an individual that needs to be organized to function properly, I have to tell you, living out of boxes over the past month proved to be one of the most difficult tasks I’ve faced yet.  Now couple that with a pregnant wife, a demanding full time job, looming newspaper deadlines and turning “Dirty 30” all at the same time and you’ll have a sense of just how looney-tunes I was feeling.

Last Sunday, almost one month to the day after moving into our new digs, we finally unpacked the last of the boxes and finished organizing the downstairs office and garage.  I felt a huge sense of relief and it shows in my work product.  The pages of my new book are really beginning to mount.  The second draft is just about done.

Below are a couple pictures of the office space, my cassettes, books and skateboards.  Today is Thursday; the rain has ceased and, according to the weather forecast, it’s supposed to remain dry through Saturday, which means I’ll be able to get out on my skateboard with the other old farts for the first time in almost a month.  Life is good.

Keep fighting the good fight...

And tried my best to replicate the order I my bookshelf at my old digs.

The San Quentin Giants deck by Kapitol Skateboards is one of my all-time favorites.  Thanks again, John!

This dresser now resides in the garage, but it has been travelling with me for close to 13 years now.  Andy Schoultz, whose always been like an older brother to me, gave me the dresser when I first moved into the infamous Lower Haight flat with him here in SF back in '97.  As you can see, there are some rare stickers on it.
