Hike to Mount Davidson
Lace up your hiking boots and sneakers for this one. Miraloma Park resident and author Jacquie Proctor leads a guided tour of Mount Davidson on Saturday afternoon. Proctor is the author of "San Francisco's West of Twin Peaks," a book profiling the history of Mount Davidson, one of the last areas in San Francisco to be developed. At an elevation of 925 feet, Mount Davidson is 15 feet taller than neighboring Twin Peaks, making it the highest point in San Francisco. On this hike, participants will explore the 38-acre nature preserve up to the hill's summit, which is home to a colossal monument and breathtaking, panoramic views of the city. Trails can be windy and muddy, so make sure to wear a jacket and sturdy shoes or boots. Don't forget your camera. 1:30 p.m. Sat. Meet at the 36 Teresita Muni line bus stop shelter at Dalewood and Myra ways, at the foot of the hill. www.miralomapark.org (click on Mount Davidson Hike under News and Notices). Free.
Architecture ride - the Reid brothers
Pedal off Saturday with the S.F. Bike Coalition on a two-hour ride that examines the architectural work of the Reid Brothers. With little professional training but plenty of determination and hustle, Canadian siblings James and Merritt designed an impressive number of San Francisco buildings in the early part of the 20th century, including the Cliff House, the Fairmont Hotel and the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse Bandshell. They even designed the S.F. Bike Coalition's very own Market Street headquarters. 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sat. Meet in front of the David Hewes Building, 995 Market St. (at Sixth Street). Don't forget your helmet. The group will stop for a snack during the ride, but it's best for you to lunch beforehand. Rain cancels. (415) 431-2453. www.sfbike.org/?chain. Free.
