Weekend Recap: Ian Johnson art opening and book release party, Andrew Schoultz second round studio visit and more...
Below is a little slideshow containing some pics I snapped over the weekend. There are also a couple of leftovers at the end of the gallery from a few weeks back.
The breakdown:
First, I stopped by the Park Life store on Saturday for the opening reception of artist Ian Johnson's solo show "Other Rooms/Other Songs.” Johnson is the longtime art director for San Francisco's Western Edition Skateboards, which he founded with Kent Uyehara of FTC Skate Shop in 1999. Jazz is the theme of Johnson's latest body of work, which consists of highly detailed portraits of jazz musicians set against lively, abstract backdrops. In addition to the exhibition, Paper Museum Press, a subsidiary of the Park Life Store, released Johnson's first book, "Beauty is a Rare Thing," which documents Johnson's past work. At 80-some pages, the book is available now at the Park Life store for roughly $20. Not only is the book fun to look at, but it smells good too. Nothing beats the smell of a new book. Show runs through Sept. 15. Park Life Store, 220 Clement St. (at Third Avenue). (415) 386-7275. www.parklifestore.com.
On Sunday, I hopped lines down to Andrew Schoultz’s Mission District studio for a second visit, where he was continuing to prepare for his big upcoming show, “In Gods We Trust,” which opens on September 4 at Marx Zavattero Gallery in Union Square. Most of the pieces for the show were already at the framers, but there were one or two left behind that Schoultz was still working on. SF Chonicle Art Director Matt Petty was also on the scene. He too is involved in the covert project Schoultz and I have been working on, which is slated for release just before the show. Stay tuned on that one.
As for the remaining pics, they were leftovers I found on my camera that I snapped on the Bay and in the Financial District a few weeks back. I really like the two snaps of the cargo ship. Those beasts fascinate the hell out of me.
Did you peep the Cellski interview I posted Saturday?
Word to Joe Frazier…
