We Gotta' Winner (Finally)!
Congrats to the Bay Area’s own John Schlesinger for winning last week’s contest, which proved to be a tough one!
The correct answer is Natas Kaupas (who happens to be one of my personal faves). Natas founded 101 Skateboards under Rocco’s empire in 1991.
As for the clue I provided encouraging contest goers to pay close attention to the shoes the homeless guy is sporting in the skit, Natas was one of the first professional skateboarders to have his own signature skate shoe. Released by Etnies in 1990, Natas is wearing the shoes in the skit, although it might be difficult to tell due to the poor quality of the clip.
John, be on the lookout for a package heading your way! Honorable mention goes out to Timothy Dowling who also provided the correct answer about an hour after John.
I have to admit, I was getting a little nervous there that nobody was going to answer correctly.
Special thanks to my man Benny Gold for hooking up the limited edition t-shirt for the contest. Benny's new Summer '08 collection is looking SICK! I need to get my hands on a couple shirts for myself. Click HERE to check out the article I penned on Benny for the S.F. Chronicle back in the April. And click HERE to check out the two videos that accompany the piece.
Contest goers will be glad to know that I’ve received a couple of emails from individuals that expressed interest in contributing product for the weekly trivia contests, so be on the lookout for a vast bouquet of different prizes in the coming weeks. I’m stoked, so I know you’ll be stoked, too! Check back on Friday morning for the announcement of this week’s contest.
Now head over to the Store section of the site and purchase yourself a copy of "Left-Handed Stories" and "No Comply -- Skateboarding Speaks on Authority." They're moving fast and I don't have a whole lot left. Once they're gone they're gone for good. I don't have any plans on reprinting anytime soon. And on that note, friends, I leave you with Natas’ part from Santa Cruz’s “Streets on Fire” video, released in 1989. That fakie Natas Slide at 2:00 is crazed…still don’t understand that one. I don't understand that fire hydrant spin at 1:08 either!
